Spam emails are not only unwanted, they may also be phishing messages used by cyber criminals. The Federal Trade Commission has tips for reducing the number of spam emails.

The FTC suggests the following:

  • Use an email filter to stop spam or funnel it to a junk email folder
  • Mark spam emails as such if they make it into your email box
  • Block spam email addresses or domains
  • Limit exposure by using two emails addresses- one for personal matters and one for shopping or other services
  • Don’t display your email address in public
  • Consider who you share your email address with
  • Unsubscribe from unwanted emails
  • Update your security software
  • Change your preset passwords
  • Detect and get rid of malware
