The IRS offers the following tips to make online shopping safer:

  • Look for the “s” in “https.”  The “s” stands for “security” and a website that begins with https means that the site uses secured, encrypted technology.
  • Don’t use public wifi to shop online.  Security thieves can access unsecured wifi spots and look at transactions.
  • Avoid phishing emails.  Don’t click on links in emails purporting “special” offers.
  • Skip online employment offers.  Unsolicited job offers (mystery shopping, work from home emails) may be ruses uses by identity thieves.  Think before sharing a Social Security Number, financial information or identity information online.
  • Shop with reputable online retailers.  Look into a retailer before making an online purchase.
  • Review financial statements frequently.  Review credit card and bank statements for unauthorized charges or withdrawals.

Following these tips can help with a cyber-safe holiday shopping season.
