The IRS issued Tax Tip 2021-77 providing six steps to prevent identity theft. Following these steps will help individuals avoid having their identities compromised and the headaches which follow.
- Always use security software. All computer software should have firewall and anti-virus protections.
- Use strong, unique passwords. A password manager can help with remembering unique passwords.
- Learn to recognize and avoid phishing emails, threatening calls and texts from thieves. Scammers can pose as legitimate organizations and entice the recipient to provide information.
- Don’t click on links in unsolicited emails or messages from unknown senders. Suspicious links should be ignored, even if they are from a known sender.
- Protect personal information and that of any dependents. Make sure tax records are secure and don’t carry personal information such as a Social Security card.
- Get an Identity Protection PIN. For tax filing, an Identity Protection PIN is a code known by only the IRS and the taxpayer to help prevent the filing of fraudulent returns.
Following these steps can help an individual keep a secure, protected identity.
