IRS “Dirty Dozen”

The IRS released its annual version of “dirty dozen” tax and security scams. The IRS produces this list to help individuals keep their information protected and secure. Some of the hot items from the 2020 Dirty Dozen are-

  • Phishing. Be aware of potential fake emails or websites looking to take personal information. There has been an increase in schemes using emails, letters, texts and links, particularly including the words coronavirus and COVID-19.
  • Fake Charities. Criminals have been setting up fake charities to steal from unsuspecting people during times of need.
  • Threatening Phone Calls. Threatening phone calls with IRS impersonators try to solicit payments.
  • Social Media Scams. Scammers email people and include social media links that appear to be legitimate.
  • Refund Theft. Criminals steal tax refunds or Economic Impact Payments.
  • Senior Fraud. Senior citizens are the most frequent demographic targetd by scammers.
  • Non-English Speaker Scams. Scammers tend to target groups with limited English proficiency to receive money and personal information.
  • Payroll and HR Scams. Employers should be on guard for requests for W-2 and other tax information.
