The Department of Health and Human Services announced settlements totaling almost $1 million with three Boston area hospitals for alleged violations of the HIPAA privacy rules.

HHS began investigating the hospitals after news stories revealed that television crews filmed a medical documentary series at the locations.

While the hospitals did put the film crews through HIPAA training, HHS determined that patient protected health information was disclosed without permission and the hospitals failed to properly protect patient information.
