The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services released 2020 report on HIPAA breaches. The report is required to be presented to Congress.
The 2020 report summarizes the HHS HIPAA enforcement actions undertaken in 2020. It identifies the number of breaches of unsecured protected health information, the nature of the breaches, and the actions taken in response to the breaches.
According to the report, the government received 656 notifications of breaches affecting 500 or more individuals. This was an increase of 61% from the number of reports received in 2019. These reported breaches affected approximately 37,641,403 individuals.
