The U.S. Office of Personnel Management announced a cybersecurity incident that impacted its computer system. The incident, which involved a breach of electronic Official Personnel Folders, may have compromised personal information of approximately 4 million current and former government employees. Information included Name, Social Security number, date and place of birth, and current or former address.

The government is contacting, by email or standard mail, all individuals whose personally identifiable information was potentially compromised. These individuals are being offered free credit monitoring and identity theft protection services. An announcement has been made that OPM immediately implemented additional security measures and will continue to improve the security of the sensitive information it manages.
