The District of Columbia’s new Wage Theft Prevention Amendment Act took effect earlier this year. The Act requires employers to provide certain notices to employees and increases employer liability for wage and hour violations.

One new requirement of the Act is that employers must provide written pay notices to employees when they are hired. Existing employees must receive notices by May 27, 2015.

The notices must include

  • The name and address of the employer and any “doing business as” names used;
  • Telephone number;
  • Rate of pay and the basis of the rate (including hour, shift, day, week, etc.);
  • Allowances claimed as part of the minimum wage;
  • Rate of overtime pay, living wage and prevailing wage, along with exemptions; and
  • Regular payday information.

The DC Department of Employment Services has a template for the written pay notices. For more information, click here.
