Data at rest encryption is important to protect data from physical loss such as (a) theft of an individual or set of solid state drives (SSD) from a data center, (b) theft or loss of a failed SSD being transported during replacement procedures, (c) theft or loss of SSDs during decommission at the ends of their useful life, or (d) transport of a full array between data centers.
HIPAA and many states’ privacy laws require encryption of data at rest. Interestingly, many people think "data at rest” refers to data on backup tapes or other archival media and not to active, production data. Data at rest actually refers to data on a disk, with no distinction between data on active compared to backup disks. In order to comply with these types of security requirements, MyEnroll active, production and backup data reside on fully encrypted disk.
