The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) issued a report addressing how to manage the Internet of Things (IoT). The report is intended to help federal agencies and other groups manage the cybersecurity and privacy risks associated with IoT devices.

IoT addresses the Internet connectivity into physical devices and everyday objects. Think about smartphones, televisions, home security systems, toys, wearables, etc. These devices can be subject to security and privacy risks just like computers and emails. Some organizations are not even aware of the number of IoT devices they use and the risks associated with them.

The report urges an understanding of the IoT device risk considerations and challenges; an adjustment of organizational policies and processes to address cybersecurity and privacy risks; and an implementation of updated mitigation practices.
