Q.- An employee wants to know if she can be reimbursed from her FSA for the cost of a home genetic testing kit. Can she?

A.- Maybe. The IRS released an opinion letter recently which found that the medical portion of a genetic testing kit may be eligible for reimbursement from a health FSA. The cost of the portion of the kit attributable to ancestry was not reimbursable. Your employee should ask the company providing the kit to separately account for the medical and non-medical portions of the testing kit on the receipt in order to submit it for reimbursement.
