The U.S. Department of Labor released a new resource to help employers understand the impact of mental health issues in the workplace.  According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, one out of five U.S. adults have a mental health condition each year.

With the prevalence of mental health issues, it is important for employers to know how to foster a mental-health friendly workplace.  Understanding mental health issues is said to help employees by demonstrating commitment to inclusion but also to help employers by encouraging employees to work to the best of their abilities.

The Mental Health Toolkit, which may be accessed by clicking here, is a repository of background information, tools and resources for learning about mental health issues.  The toolkit is based around the “4 A’s of a Mental Health Friendly Workplace”:

  1. Awareness
  2. Accommodations
  3. Assistance
  4. Access

After reviewing the toolkit, employers will have strategies for recruiting, hiring, retaining and advancing people with mental health disabilities in the workplace.
