The IRS issued a guide intended to help taxpayers avoid identity theft. The guide, which may be accessed by clicking here, identifies safeguards and additional actions being taken to combat tax-related identity theft.

To reduce the risk of identity theft, the IRS encourages the following:

  • Always use security software with firewall and anti-virus protections.
  • Use strong passwords.
  • Learn to recognize and avoid phishing emails, calls and texts from thieves posing as a legitimate organization such as a bank credit card company or IRS.
  • Do not click on links or download attachments from unknown or suspicious emails.
  • Protect personal data and don’t carry your Social Security card.

It is important for all individuals to protect their information and keep data safe.
