HIPAA Electronic Transaction Standards

The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) issued a fact sheet summarizing the rules covered entities and business associates must follow when transmitting protected health information electronically. The fact sheet addresses requirements relating to administrative transactions, code sets, unique identifiers and operating rules.

When a data is exchanged electronically, the transmission must comply with the rules set forth in the HIPAA administrative transaction standards. These rules provide requirements for sending data, receiving data, and the form in which data is passed. The recent guidance is a helpful refresher of the applicable rules for electronic transactions.
