Several government agencies have banded together to release a joint ransomware statement. Ransomware is a malicious software that is used to deny access to a computer system or data until a ransom is paid. Ransomware infects a system through phishing emails or by visiting an infected website.

The agencies suggest the following actions to build resilience against ransomware.

  1. Back up systems, now and daily. All critical systems should be backed up on a separate device with the backups stored offline.
  2. Reinforce cybersecurity awareness and education. Provide employee training on recognizing cyber threats, phishing emails and suspicious links.
  3. Review cyber incident response plans. Have a clear method to approach attacks if they occur.
