FBI Guidance on Building an Email Fortress

The Federal Bureau of Investigation suggests that all businesses build an email fortress to prevent vulnerability to phishing. The FBI’s guidance can be accessed by clicking here

The suggestions include:

  • Don’t use free web-based email accounts.
  • Ensure that firewalls are up to date.
  • Immediately report and delete suspicious emails.
  • Make sure to “forward” emails back to the sender- do not hit “reply.”
  • Check before you click.
  • Consider two-factor authentication for employee email.
  • Create a security system that flags emails with similar but incorrect formatting.
  • Encrypt email in transit.
