Employers who offer vision plans to their employees through a certain insurer may now be subsidizing frames and prescription lenses for Google Glass.

Google Glass is a wearable computer that is attached to eyeglass frames. It connects to the Internet, as a new-age consumer electronics. There is a potential business use for wearable computers within the health care system.

VSP, one of the country’s largest vision care insurers, has agreed to offer subsidized frames and prescription lenses for Google Glass. This has the potential to bring Google Glass into the mainstream, and make the device available to consumers with eye issues, as well as others.

VSP will cover costs based on an individual’s prescription plan for lenses and glasses, but will not cover the computer portion of Google Glass. VSP and Google will be offering a training program for optometrists.
