This week, 11 major companies have committed to work together toward the protection of IT infrastructure and business threats. A partnership with the National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence (NCCOE), hosted by the National Institute of Standards and Technology, an agency of the U.S. Department of Commerce, was created to address business-specific security challenges.

The NCCOE is tasked to work with industry, academic and government experts to find solutions for businesses’ cybersecurity needs. Partnering companies include Cisco Systems Inc., Hewlett-Packard, HyTrust Inc., Intel Corp., McAfee Inc., Microsoft Federal Civilian Services, RSA, Splunk Inc., Symantec Corp., Vanguard Integrity Professionals and Venafi Inc.

The NCCOE will act as a sounding board for users and vendors to pose new technologies and ideas and share suggested solutions for implementation. It is intended to allow for the rapid adoption of universal cybersecurity templates and create collaborative approaches across businesses.

A four step process will be followed by NCCOE participants. They will

  • identify the problem and defined a project around technical use cases in which needs are not met;
  • assemble a team of cybersecurity experts from industry, government and academia;
  • build practical model solutions based on commercially available technology that are repeatable, secure and can be used with various products; and
  • facilitate rapid, widespread deployment and use of these solutions.

This new partnership is clear recognition that businesses face daily threats to their data and systems. The collaborative effort will promote the pooling of resources to address real security needs.
