Many employers look to wellness programs in an effort to contain costs.  Healthy employees tend to be productive employees, and require less time off for illness and injury.  Healthy employees can also save an employer in health care expenditures.

Wellness programs can take many forms.  Some programs work in connection with the health plan, but others are pure employer initiatives.  Consider the following suggestions for workplace wellness:

  • Offer healthy food choices in a vending machine;
  • Provide free healthy snacks such as fruit;
  • Promote a lunchtime walking group;
  • Offer periodic chair massages;
  • Post healthy tips on bulletin boards;
  • Hold lunch and learns on wellness topics;
  • Ban all forms of tobacco use;
  • Consider on-site exercise classes or equipment;
  • Promote stretch breaks throughout the day;
  • Encourage the use of stairs instead of the elevator;
  • Form out of work sports teams;
  • Negotiate discounts on health club memberships;
  • Offer health screenings.
Employees may have their own ideas on wellness programs that work for them.  Employers may want to make wellness part of the working day.
