Malware, or malicious code, is an unwanted file that compromises data or harms a computer. Ransomware is a type of malware that infects computers and programs. Typically, it encrypts computer files until a sum of money (the ransom) is paid. Ransomware can spread from system to connected system. If the ransom is not paid (and sometimes even if it is paid), the files stay encrypted and are lost to the victim.

Ransomware finds data on a system and encrypts the data by adding an extension to the end of the file. After the encryption, the ransomware displays a file with instructions on how the ransom can be paid. The payment releases a key that can be used to unlock the files.

Ransomware is usually infected on a computer through phishing emails or automatic unwanted downloads.

To prevent against malware, including ransomware, make sure to back up our computer, update and patch software, be mindful of unknown websites and open attachments or click on links with caution.
