Q.- We provide group term life insurance to our employees. The carrier allows employees to ‘buy up’ for an increased benefit. Do we include the life insurance plan in our COBRA notice?

A.- No. COBRA allows the continuation of coverage under a group health plan, and life insurance is not considered a group health plan benefit. You may have to provide your employees the right to convert their life insurance to an individual policy upon termination of employment, and there may be specific forms you need to give to your employees for the conversion right. Consult your life insurance company.
