Q.- An employee is enrolled in single coverage in our HDHP and is contributing to an HSA. She elected to participate in our health flexible spending account plan because she wants to be reimbursed for her husband’s medical expenses. Is this allowed if she is enrolled in single coverage?

A.- The employee is not permitted to be reimbursed from a health FSA for her husband’s expenses unless that FSA is a limited purpose FSA. If an employee is enrolled in a HDHP with HSA, neither the employee nor the spouse may participate in or be reimbursed from a general health flexible spending account plan, even if the employee is enrolled in single coverage.
