Q.- An employee submitted a claim for therapy for her mental state due to problems in her marriage due to the pandemic. Is this expense eligible for reimbursement from our health flexible spending account plan?

A.- Maybe. “Problems in a Relationship with a Spouse or Partner” is not a diagnosed medical condition. If that is the code used on the psychotherapy receipt, additional documentation will be needed before the expense can be reimbursed.

The person should be asked to provide a letter of medical necessity from a doctor saying the psychotherapy is necessary to treat a medical condition. Without the additional documentation of a medical condition, the expense will be considered to have been incurred for general good mental health which makes it ineligible for reimbursement.
