Q.- Is a prescription and a letter of medical necessity the same thing for reimbursing a dual-purpose expense?

A.- Not necessarily. If an item has both a medical and a non-medical purpose, it requires special documentation to be reimbursed from a health flexible spending account plan. The physician must confirm that the expense is medically necessary to address a specific medical condition. Just providing a prescription for the item does not necessarily indicate that it is medically necessary for addressing a diagnosed condition.
