The Wage and Hour Division of the U.S. Department of Labor publishes many resources for employers.  One such resource, Labor Standards Information for New and Small Businesses, offers a summary of rules that businesses must follow for compliance with DOL requirements.

The booklet addresses major statutes administered by the Wage and Hour Division, including:

  • Fair Labor Standards Act (requiring employees be paid at least the federal minimum wage)
  • Youth Employment (14 is the minimum working age)
  • Employee Polygraph Protection Act (limits use of lie detector tests)
  • Family and Medical Leave Act (requiring employers of 50 or more employees to offer job-protected leave)
  • Consumer Credit Protection Act (limits on wage garnishment)
  • Davis Bacon and Related Acts (payment of prevailing wages and fringe benefits for federally assisted construction projects)
  • McNamara-O’Hara Service Contract Act (payments of prevailing wages for services furnished to agencies of the federal government)
  • Immigration and Nationality Act (rules for employing alien workers)

The booklet also describes ERISA, USERRA, and other laws applicable to businesses.
