The Wage and Hour Division of the U.S. Department of Labor publishes many resources for employers. One such resource, Labor Standards Information for New and Small Businesses, offers a summary of rules that businesses must follow for compliance with DOL requirements.
The booklet addresses major statutes administered by the Wage and Hour Division, including:
- Fair Labor Standards Act (requiring employees be paid at least the federal minimum wage)
- Youth Employment (14 is the minimum working age)
- Employee Polygraph Protection Act (limits use of lie detector tests)
- Family and Medical Leave Act (requiring employers of 50 or more employees to offer job-protected leave)
- Consumer Credit Protection Act (limits on wage garnishment)
- Davis Bacon and Related Acts (payment of prevailing wages and fringe benefits for federally assisted construction projects)
- McNamara-O’Hara Service Contract Act (payments of prevailing wages for services furnished to agencies of the federal government)
- Immigration and Nationality Act (rules for employing alien workers)
The booklet also describes ERISA, USERRA, and other laws applicable to businesses.
