The Federal Trade Commission released an alert on keeping software up to date. Updating software helps protect sensitive financial and tax information.

Software should be updated on an ongoing basis and as soon as a new version is released. The FTC suggests setting updates to happen automatically because criminals seek to exploit vulnerabilities before the software companies release fixes.

Software to update includes:

  • Security software, such as antivirus and firewall programs.
  • Operating system software, such as Windows, Apple OS, etc.
  • Internet browsers and apps.

Keeping up with software releases is an added protection to keeping electronic information safe.
