President Obama held a summit last month to address issues facing working families.  According to White House statistics,

  • Women make up 47% of the workforce
  • On average, women earn 77 cents for every dollar earned by men
  • African American women are paid only 64 cents, and Hispanic women only 54 cents, for every dollar paid to white, non-Hispanic men
  • In 3 out of 5 married families with children, both parents work
  • Women earn 59% of all higher education degrees

The summit was intended to focus on how the country can best support working families, including working women. The President strongly pushed for paid maternity leave for US workers, along with equal pay, increased minimum wage, and increased access to technology jobs for minorities and women.
