The IRS is warning people to be alert for online scams and schemes during tax season. They advise that cybersecurity protection and scam recognition is vitally important to reduce the chance of identity theft.

The following tips may help minimize exposure to fraud and identity theft:

  • Safeguard personal data. Provide a Social Security number only when necessary.
  • Protect personal information. Don’t give personal information to unknown people.
  • Use strong passwords.  Use at least 10 characters; 12 is better and don’t repeat passwords.
  • Set password and encryption protections for wireless networks. Use multi-factor authentication when possible.
  • Avoid phishing scams. Recognize phishing emails and don’t click on attachments or links within unknown messages.
  • Use security software. Use an anti-virus program and keep it up to date.
  • Educate those less experienced about online safety.  Talk to children and others who may not have a lot of online experience about safety.
  • Back up files.  Copy important files onto backup drives or cloud storage.
  • Know the risk of public Wi-Fi. Connection to public Wi-Fi may not be safe.
