Aetna inadvertently revealed the HIV status of some of its members. In July, a letter was sent to certain Aetna participants with information about HIV medication. The information was visible through the plastic mailing window.

Aetna recognized the error and sent a second letter apologizing for the disclosure. The apology said that medication information may have been able to be viewed if the letter shifted in the envelope during mailing. Aetna said it is reviewing processes to ensure the error does not happen again. A third party was responsible for the mailing.
