The Office of Advocacy of the U.S. Small Business Administration supports small business owners and conducts research to understand the needs of such businesses. This spring, the Office issued a report evaluating the state of women-owned businesses.

The report, “Women’s Business Ownership: Data from the 2012 Survey of Business Owners,” analyzes data from the Census Bureau’s Survey of Business Owners, which provides a large-scale survey on business demographics. The data shows that while there are women-owned businesses in every industry group, they are more prevalent in the service sector. For example, women own 89% of the child daycare industry.

Based on the data, women are majority owners of 9.9 million businesses, generating $1.4 trillion in sales. Women-owned businesses employ 8.4 million individuals. 99.9% of women-owned businesses are small businesses (fewer than 500 employees).
