A recent data exposure at an Indianapolis-based hospital highlights the importance of direct mail process controls. The hospital mistakenly mailed more than 63,000 letters with patient information to the wrong addresses.
Sensitive information contained in the letters included patient names and addresses as well as references to scheduled appointments. In response to the incident, the hospital notified impacted individuals and is destroying returned letters. It is also changing its patient mailing processes.
This exposure serves as yet another reminder that all sensitive information, whether electronic or paper-based, must be protected.
