The HITECH Act requires the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to submit an annual report to Congress identifying all HIPAA compliance complaints each year. HHS produced the report identifying HIPAA enforcement activities during 2020.
The report identifies the number of complaints received, the method by which the complaints were resolved, the number of compliance reviews initiated by HHS, the outcome of each review, the number of audits perform and findings, and the number of anticipated enforcement activities for 2021.
HHS received 27,182 new complaints alleging violations of the HIPAA Rules. This was 4% decrease from the number of complaints received in 2019. Of those complaints, 26,530 were resolved with 19,826 (75%) resolved before initiating an investigation. The full report may be accessed by clicking here.
