On December 22, 2015, the United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team released guidance on extending cybersecurity beyond traditional laptop and desktop computers.  US-CERT urged consumers to recognize that cyber controls are necessary for all electronic devices, including cell phones, tablets, video games and even car navigation systems.  They observe that attackers may be able to target devices that have previously been considered safe.

The government provided the following guidance for protection from attack:

  • Remember physical security - Do not leave your device unattended in public or easily accessible areas.
  • Keep software up to date - If the vendor releases updates for the software operating your device, install them as soon as possible.
  • Use good passwords - Choose devices that allow you to protect your information with passwords.
  • Disable remote connectivity – Disable wireless features when not in use.
  • Encrypt files - By encrypting files, you ensure that unauthorized people can't view data even if they can physically access it.
  • Be cautious of public Wi-Fi networks - Do not conduct sensitive activities, such as online shopping, banking, or sensitive work, using a public wireless network.

All consumers should use make these tips their standard operating procedure.
