The Federal Bureau of Investigations’ Internet Crime Report identifies an “unprecedented” increase in cyber attacks and malicious cyber activity. The Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) branch of the FBI provides a direct way for the public to report cyber crimes to the FBI. The IC3 investigates and analyzes the reporting to track trends and threats from cybercriminals. This data is shared with law enforcement.

In 2021, IC3 received 847,376 reported complaints which was an increase of 7% from 2020. Potential losses in 2021 exceeded $6.9 billion. The most frequently reported complaints related to ransomware, business e-mail compromise and the criminal use of cryptocurrency.
