Today, the IRS extended a key Affordable Care Act deadline - the due date for furnishing to individuals the 2018 Form 1095-B and Form 1095-C.

Notice 2018-94 extends the due date for 1095-B/C distribution from January 31, 2019 to March 4, 2019. The extension is automatic and employers do not have to take action to get the timing relief. The Notice also extends transition relief from penalties if an employer makes a "good faith effort" to comply with reporting requirements.

As in prior years, the extension means some individual taxpayers may not receive a Form 1095-B or Form 1095-C by the time they are ready to file their 2018 tax return. Taxpayers do not need to wait to receive their ACA forms before filing their returns.

The extension comes as somewhat of a surprise as a delay was not expected for 2018 filings.
