Anthem, one of the largest health insurers in the country, announced yesterday that it experienced a large data breach. According to Anthem’s website, they were the subject of a “sophisticated external cyber attack.”  Over 80 million records may have been implicated. The breach was identified around January 29, 2015.

Anthem reported that the attackers gained unauthorized access to Anthem’s IT system, which exposed personal information about current and former members. Information included names, birthdays, medical ID numbers/Social Security numbers, addresses, email addresses and employment information (including income data). Information about current employees was also compromised.

Anthem is working with the FBI to investigate the matter and has engaged a cybersecurity firm to evaluate systems and propose solutions.

All members whose information has been accessed will be offered free credit monitoring and identity protection services. Anthem created a website – www.AnthemFacts.com – for more information.
