The government is not exempt from the increasing number of health data security breaches. Last week, the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services reported a data breach in the portal for the Affordable Care Act’s (ACA) health care marketplace www.healthcare.gov. The Marketplace portal is used by brokers who help individuals enroll in ACA health coverage. It is not accessed by individual customers. The breach was discovered October 13 and reported October 16.

The breach potentially implicated the personal information of 75,000 individuals. CMS is investigating the incident and has disabled the enrollment portal.
