In 2014, the U.S. Congress adopted a resolution designating January 28 as “National Data Privacy Day.”  This day is a national recognition of the importance of electronic data security.  It commemorates the January 28, 1981 signing of Convention 108, the first international treaty addressing privacy and data protection.  Canada and countries in Europe also recognize the importance of data protection on this day.

The National Cyber Security Alliance, a non-profit group promoting a safer Internet, spearheads National Data Privacy Day events. It aims to have businesses, consumers and the government increase their awareness of privacy and data protection issues.

Data Privacy Day is a good reminder for employers to review their data and security protocols and make sure they are providing adequate protection to electronic information.
