UPMC, affiliated with the University of Pittsburgh Schools of the Health Sciences, has reported a data breach impacting its employees. No patient data was stolen.

Last month, UPMC reported that tax information, including Social Security Numbers, of its employees was stolen. About 27,000 of its 62,000 employees were victims of the theft. Many of the employees have had their information used for fraudulent tax returns, and some have had their personal bank accounts compromised. UPMC is working with the IRS and FBI to determine the cause and scope of the breach. It appears as if the breach is connected to a nation-wide tax fraud scheme.
