Q.- For my health flexible spending account plan, what is the difference between a Letter of Medical Necessity and a Prescription?

A.- A prescription must be written in accordance with state law to be a valid prescription. A letter of medical necessity is just a letter from a doctor describing item or service and explaining why it is necessary to treat a medical condition.

An actual prescription is required for reimbursement of over the counter medicines or drugs. A letter of medical necessity is required when an item or service has both a medical and a non-medical purpose.
