The Bill of Rights is a set of consumer protections that the White House intends Congress to implement through legislation. The Bill of Rights provides for

  • Individual Control- Consumers have a right to control what personal data companies collect and how they use it.
  • Transparency- Consumers have a right to easily understandable and accessible information.
  • Respect for Context- Consumers have a right to expect that companies will collect, use and disclose their personal data only in ways that are consistent with why they provide the data.
  • Security- Consumers have a right to secure and responsible handling of personal data.
  • Access and Accuracy- Consumers have a right to access and correct their data in a usable format and in a way that protects the sensitivity of their data.
  • Focused Collection- Consumers have a right to be sure that companies that use their data will adhere to the Bill of Rights.

As security becomes a bigger and bigger focus, the Bill of Rights serves as a good reminder of protecting the security of individual personal information.
