HIPAA lawsuits have the potential to reach everyone. It has been reported that the IRS is being sued over allegations that its agents stole health records of 10 million patients. The company bringing the suit is an unnamed covered entity located in California.

The organization was under audit for financial matters, but the IRS agents seized health records in connection with their search. The complaint says that no search warrant or subpoena authorized the removal of health records, and the IRS agents knew that the documents contained personal health information. A United States House of Representatives subcommittee has called for an investigation of IRS practices.
