Google's announcement this week that beginning March 1, it will merge user data collected across multiple Google services, in conjunction with recent customer security incidents by the likes of big-companies Zappos and Sony, has once again brought privacy and security issues to the forefront.

Both the White House and the Federal Trade Commission are expected to release privacy reports and propose compliance standards within the coming weeks.

All companies in today's business world are subject to potential privacy and security compliance issues. With email communications and data stored in the cloud, companies should take a proactive approach to privacy and security compliance. Organizations should consider inventorying their security and privacy initiatives to ensure best-practice compliance. In so doing, companies can consider

  • Compliance with federal requirements, such as HIPAA, Gramm-Leach-Bliley, SOX, etc;
  • Assigned security and privacy responsibilities within the organization;
  • Required compliance certification of computer system networks and operating systems;
  • In-house security and privacy training;
  • Access authentication and control procedures;
  • Network and server monitoring and compliance.
