Q.- Our employee was offered medical, dental and vision coverage under COBRA. He elected only medical and vision. He is now eligible for Medicare. Is he now eligible for an 18 month extension of dental and vision coverage?

A.- Probably not. Active employees enrolled in the dental and vision plans most likely would not lose coverage upon Medicare entitlement. The same rules would apply to someone who continued dental and vision coverage under COBRA. If vision and dental coverage under the active plan would not end upon Medicare entitlement, becoming entitled to Medicare would not be a second qualifying event for an extension of COBRA coverage.
