Q.- Can an employee enroll in our health plan in the middle of a year?

A.- That depends. If you allow premiums to be paid on a pre-tax basis through a cafeteria plan, the employee must experience a qualified life event approved by the IRS in order to enroll for benefits mid-year. You should make sure your plan recognizes the even as allowing mid-year enrollment. If benefits are not paid with pre-tax dollars, you may have more flexibility. If your plan is insured, you should check with your insurance company.
