Q.- Can the cost of an Apple Watch be reimbursed from a health FSA?

A.- In certain circumstances and with the proper documentation, Yes.

Reimbursement may be possible if:

  • The device is recommended by a medical provider to treat or monitor a specific medical condition
  • The expense is primarily for medical care
  • The employee provides appropriate documentation, such as a Letter of Medical Necessity

The LOMN is required because the Apple watch had features that are both medical in nature and non medical in nature (such as phone/text and app capability). Therefore, a provider must indicate that the watch is necessary for medical care.
