August each year is National Breastfeeding Awareness month. The U.S. Department of Labor used the month to highlight maternal health and workplace protections for expectant and new mothers.

Federal law prohibits discrimination against pregnant workers and working mothers. Employers should be familiar with laws requiring time off for the birth or adoption of a child and laws that require breaks to express breast milk in a private place.

The U.S. Department of Labor has helpful fact sheets addressing Birth & Bonding and Job-Protected Leave under the FMLA. Those documents may be accessed here.
