IRS Scams

The Internal Revenue Service issued a warning about email scams and is urging tax preparers and tax payers to be on guard against suspicious activity.

According to the IRS, cybercriminals are making use of sophisticated scams to trick people into divulging sensitive information. Many of the requests come via email. The IRS is urging people to verbally reconfirm any change in information such as change in address or location of direct deposit. The IRS is also suggesting changing email passwords to better protect accounts used to transmit sensitive data.

Suspicious emails intending to be from the IRS or a software provider should be forwarded to phishing@irs.gov.
