ACA Open Enrollment for Individual Coverage

Written by BAS | Oct 26, 2017 12:00:00 PM

The open enrollment period to elect coverage under an individual plan in the Health Care Exchange Marketplace runs from November 1, 2017 through December 15, 2017. Coverage selected during the open enrollment period becomes effective January 1, 2018. After December 15, 2017, an individual can enroll in Marketplace coverage only if the individual experiences a special enrollment life event.

The Marketplace offers qualifying health coverage to individuals who do not have health coverage through an employer or another government program such as CHIP or Medicare. Individuals who do not elect job-based coverage may purchase a Marketplace plan, but they will not be entitled to cost subsidies unless the employer plan does not meet certain standards.

Most people who purchase coverage through the Marketplace are eligible for subsidies toward that coverage. The savings is based on annual household income. Household income must be between 100% and 400% of the federal poverty level to qualify for a premium tax credit.

Individuals can apply for coverage at www.healthcare.gov. Applications can be made online, by phone, in person or with a paper application. All individuals should make sure they have qualifying health coverage or will be subject to a tax penalty.
