Q.- I was terminated from employment and offered 18 months of COBRA continuation coverage. Someone told me that I could extend the coverage past the 18 month period. Is this true?
A.- If you are disabled during the first 60 days of an 18-month continuation coverage period and you provide proof of your Social Security disability determination, you may be entitled to continue your coverage (at an increased charge) for up to an additional 11 months, or until you are no longer disabled, if earlier. You must obtain a determination of disability from the Social Security Administration and furnish a copy of the determination within 60 days of the determination and no later than the end of the original 18-moth continuation period. If you have a second qualifying event while receiving continuation coverage, your spouse and dependent children may receive additional months of COBRA coverage, up to a maximum of 36 months.
